Any of you who know me, know that I love bargain makeup and I love saving money too. So finding ways to have beautiful, frugal makeup is a topic that endlessly interests me.

Have you ever bought beauty products and realized you didn’t like it? Or you changed your hair color and now it doesn’t work for you.

I was thinking about the clothes swaps that host for my friends a few times a year.

Several times a year, a bunch of my friends meet to have a clothes swap. Sometimes we bring shoes, purses and jewelry, but mostly we bring clothing, plus our friendship and laughter.

Leftover clothing and accessories can go to the local women’s shelter.

You can’t donate your used makeup to a charity, but you can still do something similar with unwanted beauty products.

Here are some hints and tips for having a beauty products swap party!

Have lots of mirrors. Have your party guests bring them in addition to their unwanted beauty products.

You need a big table. Everyone comes in with the makeup they don’t want and can leave with a new makeup wardrobe.

Don’t pass it on. Make sure it’s not dark in the room so that partygoers can really see what the cosmetics looks like on their face. So, light up the room!

The #1 issue with a makeup swap party is keeping everything sanitary so that you’re not swapping more than makeup back and forth!

Here are some makeup swap party tips:

Part of the festivities can involve giving each other makeovers. If you do, each person playing makeup artist should clean their hands first.

Have the following supplies available or ask people to bring them:

• washcloths
• cotton swabs
• soap and water to wash hands and faces
• wash cloths
• cotton balls or cosmetic applicator sponges that are disposable
• wash cloths
• disposable eyeshadow applicators if you can get them
• makeup brushes (have everyone bring their own), along with gentle shampoo
• cosmetics pencil sharpeners for small and thick pencils

Let’s talk about specific tips for different types of cosmetics.

Mascara is not a good item to swap, you can get mascara deals in other places. Medical experts say to throw your eye mascara away every 4 months. Mascara can dry out over time, and worse, it can breed germs if you share the brush with another person. Get rid of mascara that you don’t want!

Powder Eyeshadow or Cream Eyeshadow can be swapped but to keep it sanitary, buff off the first layer of shadow with a clean piece of cloth or a piece of tissue.
If you have those throwaway eyeshadow applicators, once it’s been made hygienic by wiping it off, you won’t have to do it again for the rest of the party.

Liquid Eyeliner is just like mascara. Get rid of it! This is not an item you want to share with others.

Like EyeshadowCake Mineral Makeup or Compact Powder buff off the first layer and you have made it hygienic.

Eye Pencils can be sharpened to a brand new tip and then used. Just make sure you sharpen the Eye Pencil or Lip Pencil all the way down so that the new person is using a brand new tip.

Lipsticks you can wipe off with a soft cloth or tissue paper.

Perfumes and colognes are easy to swap without any hygiene. Perfume can interact with people’s body chemistry and smell different on different people.

All cosmetics have a shelf life. Obviously, if the makeup item smells or looks funny, or even if it’s just really old, throw it away.
