Why are we forced to analyze poetry?

Does analyzing a poem not go against what poetry really is? If we analyze it, and take it apart bit by bit, I think that detracts from the beauty that is poetry. When I read poems written by Robert Frost, I don’t sit there and beat it with a hose to try and get the “true” meaning out of it. Rather, I just let the emotions brought on by the poem simmer….Am I making any sense?

I personally don’t think we should have to analyze poetry in school (Can you tell that’s what what I am expected to do?). So, if anyone could explain to me the point of analyzing poetry…well, it would be much obliged.

How else can you appreciate it unless we bi sect it and tri se ct it and qu ad se ct it and chop it into tiny little bits so you can see how it works.

“Student, get out your hoses. It’s time to analyze the Poems of Lord Byron.”

THUMP THUMP THUMPTHUMPTHUMP

i had an english teacher that so sucked the life out of poems, I NOW think all poetry sucks, including my own

My big bugaboo was “interpretation”. Since my “interpretation” was not his “interpretation”, I was

WRONG
WRONG
WRONG

So, if there is only one meaning to the poem, there cannot BE interpretation, so don’t waste my time asking for an understanding that is not there. Just tell me how I am to feel and then i can move on to the next abomination
